Even today more than 300,000 Haitian children are living as slaves, trapped in the "restavek" system - a French term meaning "stay with," which betrays the real circumstances for many young children who are living a life of extreme servitude, with neglect, physical and sexual abuse, and isolation the norm. Jean-Robert Cadet, author of the autobiography "Restavec: From Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American," speaks of his childhood experience as a restavec and what compelled him to found the Jean-Robert Cadet Foundation: RESTAVEK NO MORE.
